Karsh Hagan hosts Make—a Kegs with Legs event

There are those who are in this industry for the paycheck (although, we question their math skills), and those who are in it for the passion. Make is an evening celebrating the latter. Come make a little street art, make a new connection and help us make a dent in our liquor supply.

May 16, 5:30 p.m.

Karsh Hagan

685 South Broadway

You can polish a turd. You can put lipstick on a pig. But bad ideas are still bad ideas. That's why we want good ideas. Good ideas should be seen, heard, and celebrated. And our judges will find the 50 best.

WHAT IS THE FIFTY? The Fifty does what every advertising show on Earth tries to do. Celebrate the good idea. Big. Small. Integrated. Traditional. Advertising. PR. Self-promotion. There are no categories here. It is media-neutral. And partial to smart thinking.

AdClubAces

AD CLUB ACES: FULL HOUSE IN PLAY.

Heroes are among us.

They are behind the scenes. They lurk in the shadows. And they are the wings beneath our wings.

They are the Ad Club Aces—the vendors, suppliers and freelancers roaming through the Denver advertising and marketing community raising the bar for all of us.

Who do you think is the Best Web Developer? Best Printer? Best Educator? Nominate them.
We all celebrated them with Colorado’s latest and greatest ideas at The Fifty.

DROGA RECAP

David Droga: Big Ideas, Small Ego.

Any creative worth his salt would agree. The resume of David Droga automatically induces drool. Consider: David is the most awarded creative in the history of the Cannes International Festival. He has multiple titles that employed words like “worldwide” and “executive” and “director”. His current agency Droga5 is the toast of the robust and mighty New York ad scene. In its fledgling six-year existence, Droga5 was heralded by Ad Age as Agency of the Year. Twice. So you think someone with his storied career would have a head as big as Manhattan, right?

If you were one of the lucky attendees of this Ad Club Denver sold-out event, you knew otherwise. For all of his intergalactic success, Droga is just a regular guy. He just loved talking about the work. He shared surprisingly fresh brand solutions for Kraft, Steinlager, Newcastle, and Puma. He shared non-profit greatness with the Tap Project. He even cautiously showed how The Great Schlep helped Barack Obama win the 2008 Presidential election. We say cautiously as Droga expressed heavy concern about offending anyone with heart for the Republican party.

And there’s the difference. In a world of big, inflated egos, Droga shines with even bigger inflated ideas.

Jim Glynn Silver Medal Roast
Glynn Gleans Glee, Glory & Guarded Gravitas

In the past, the Ad Club Denver Silver Medal Award goes to a recipient that heads an agency or a department. May 17 marked the day when it was given to someone who heads a city.

That someone was copywriter and creative director Jim Glynn. Rare is it that you find one man who has impacted an advertising community with such a love for the work (and an occasionally burning cynicism toward suits). But to receive such an honor for Jim came at a price. A roast.

One by one, creatives and account people told stories of Denver's most notorious copywriter. Roasters included Mike Sukle of Sukle Advertising & Design, Norm Shearer and Matt Chiabotti of Cactus, Don Poole of Tuma, Tom Leydon of CCT Advertising, Rock Obenchain, and Chris Preston, among others.

The skewering of Jim through historical stories was held at the Wynkoop Brewery. This was one of Ad Club's grander reunions celebrating the man who built a legacy for himself. Not to mention quite a few agencies. Congrats, Jim. You got the last word. ;P

Ad Legend Luke Sullivan Gets To The Point:

HOW TO SUCK LESS!

This wasn’t so much just a talk about advertising. If anything, it was about how Luke Sullivan has himself sucked. But in doing so he has discovered certain truths about human nature.

None of us want to suck. We want to do work that inspires. The fact is that the trappings of our everyday lives conspire to deliver us to suckage. Our own nature is the devil.

That was the takeaway of February 10th’s sold-out talk with the iconic writer. Fear, laziness and arrogance are the enemies of greatness. We all have those qualities. The key to sucking less is in how we manage them. It was the same plainspoken, Midwest honesty that made his book, Hey Whipple, Squeeze This.” into the industry bible that it is.
